Grandma’s Molasses Cookies

Mama D always had a cookie jar filled with these cookies sitting on her kitchen counter. It was the first place family headed when they walked in the door.



  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup Grandma’s Molasses
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger


Cream shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.  Add and beat the egg and syrup well.  Sift dry ingredients together and add to above mixture.  Chill 1 hour and roll into 1-inch balls.  Roll in granulated sugar.  Place balls 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet.  Bake at 375 for 8 to 10 minutes.  Cool slightly.  Then remove from baking sheet.  (These have cracked tops and the sugar gives a slight gloss.)
