Aunt Sally’s Cookies

Cream together:

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 cup shortening

1 cup molasses

Add:

2 teaspoons soda dissolved in 1/2 cup hot coffee

Sift together:

5 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon cloves

1 teaspoon salt

Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture.  Chill dough.  Roll and cut 1/8 inch thick with Spam can for original shape.

The cookies puff when baked so makes an attractive “gingerbread boy”.  Bake 6-8 minutes at 350.  Cool and frost.

Frosting:

2 envelopes plain gelatin dissolved in 1 1/2 cups hot water.  Add 1 1/2 cups white sugar and boil 10 minutes.  Stir in 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar.  Beat until foamy.  Add 2 tsp vanilla and 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder.  Beat about 10 minutes.  Yields 5 dozen.
